Ever wonder what's really in your sunscreen? How can you tell how effective it is until you try it? And how safe is avobenzone, anyway?
I know an excellent website that can answer these questions! Skin Deep is a database that rates the safety of cosmetics and skin care products. Its researchers are from the Environmental Working Group, a non-profit organization that works to protect public health and the environment.
Most of the products reviewed on Skin Deep are tested for possible toxins, adequacy of safety trials, and environmental impact. I know I like having that kind of information about anything I put on my body!
But they go a step further with the sunscreen, testing for effectiveness as well as safety. Simply search under a sunscreen name and you'll get a rating of both its effectiveness and its safety. (A low score means good for you.) You'll see all the ingredients and EWG's opinion on each.
Best of all, you can go directly to Skin Deep's list of top-rated sunscreens (see also here). There are numerous varieties to choose from that are both effective and kind to your body and the earth. California Baby, here I come!
I think EWG rocks for providing this information. But remember everyone, even the most effective, high-SPF sunscreen needs to be reapplied every few hours!
California Baby Sunblock Stick/No Fragrance is on sale at Goddess Within.
Blue Lizard Sensitive appears to be out of stock everywhere at the moment -- but other recommended varieties are on sale at Drugstore.com.
